Dr. Josh Andres is a researcher and educator in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, and User Experience (UX), with experience across industry, industrial research, and academia. His work spans research, curriculum design, teaching, and fostering inclusive academic culture. He supervises PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate students and welcomes opportunities for research, applied collaborations, and co-supervision.
Josh is internationally recognised in the HCI community. His PhD received the ACM SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation Award—the first awarded in Australia. He is an Associate Researcher at the Exertion Games Lab (Monash University) and a Research Fellow at the Wellth Lab (University of Southampton). He served on the SIGCHI Executive Committee as Chair of Awards (2021–2022) and supported the General Chairs of the 2020 CHI Conference. He also founded and currently chairs the ACM SIGCHI Chapter for Canberra, a growing community of over 50 members across academia, industry, and startups.
With over 48 publications at top-tier venues including CHI, DIS, CHIPLAY, IUI, TEI, DRS, UbiComp, and SXSW Sydney, his work has gained national and international media attention and over 15,000 combined video views. Outlets featuring his work include OpenBCI, ZDNet, The Age, Channel 9, Insiderobotics, and Sydney Morning Herald.
As a certified Design Thinking Coach, Josh has published and delivered over 15 academic workshops and more than 30 in applied industry and research settings—often designing sessions with a teaching and facilitation philosophy that combines hands-on practice in small groups, share-backs, and open, inclusive discussion activities.
Prior to the Australian National University, Josh spent seven years at IBM Research, working on HCI, AI, blockchain, health, and the future of work—co-inventing 35 patents. Before that, he led the design of multidevice experiences used by millions. His research and design leadership have contributed to over $22 million AUD in technology engagements and to guidelines that promote inclusive, safer, and more joyful experiences.
